The Special Needs Assisting course will give you all the skills, confidence and qualifications necessary to become a Special Needs Assistant. Our tutor will guide you through all aspects of the role and will also provide you with all the support you need to gain your QQI Level 6 Award.

You can complete the Special Needs Assisting course as a stand alone module, which runs one evening per week for eight weeks. At the end of the eight weeks and on completion of your course work, you will be awarded a QQI Level 6 Certificate which will enable you to work as a Special Needs Assistant. • You will be shown how to create learning opportunities by devising and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Individual Behaviour Plans (IBP’s) .
  • You will introduce exercises that teach the individual to look after themselves and their property which ultimately encourages independence, respect, self-esteem and responsibility.
  • You will be capable of creating and maintaining appropriate relationships with children, their parents, their primary carers, teachers and other professionals.
  • You will gain the skills to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • You will develop an understanding of national and local models of best practice.

  • You will be taught how to identify strategies for dealing with stressors in the workplace.

Assessment
You will be given assignments to complete as part of your Special Needs Assisting assessment. You will have to complete a project that demonstrates that you have fully understood the course content and know how to apply the principles of Special Needs Assisting in a real life situation. The assessment is divided into two parts, one will focus on your Project work and the other on your Skills Demonstration report.

Your Certificate

Upon completion of this module you will receive a QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) Level 6 Minor Award (6N1957) Special Needs Assisting Certificate. Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is the national awarding body for further and higher education and training in Ireland. Forus Training is a provider of education and training programmes and we issue certificates to learners who have reached the standard for a QQI award. The certificate you will receive on successful completion of the course and submission of your assignments is a formal confirmation by QQI that you have demonstrated the knowledge, skill and competence required to achieve the named award.

This ensures that your award is nationally and internationally recognised and has many potential uses, for example should you want to continue your studies as part of a major award or to go on to do a course in higher education in Ireland or abroad. The certificate will also be recognised by employers as an award listed on the NFQ (National Framework of Qualifications).
