THE TOWN OF YOUGHAL

The town of Youghal was abuzz with excitement on the evening of the highly anticipated launch of The Bob Bickerdike Photo Exhibition, held at the Cumann na Daoine premises on Catherine Street. This remarkable exhibition, curated by local filmmaker and archivist Kieran McCarthy, is a stunning tribute to the late Bob Bickerdike, whose lens captured the essence of Youghal’s vibrant community from the 1950s through the 1970s.

The exhibition is a testament to Kieran McCarthy’s dedication and passion for preserving local history. Kieran, known for his previous work on films like “Wish You Were Here: The Redbarn Story” and “The Printer,” has meticulously archived, digitised, and now brought to life some of the vast collection of Bickerdike’s photographs for the public to enjoy. The people of Youghal owe a deep debt of gratitude to Kieran, whose efforts have ensured that these precious memories will be cherished for generations to come.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

The launch event was a deeply emotional and nostalgic experience for those in attendance. The evening began with the first public screening of a specially curated 20-minute slideshow, featuring over 150 images from Bickerdike’s collection, set to evocative music. The slideshow served as a time capsule, transporting viewers back to a Youghal of yesteryear, filled with familiar faces, places, and moments long forgotten. For many, it was a poignant reunion with their own history, bringing tears to the eyes of those who saw their younger selves and loved ones in these never-before-seen photographs.

Following the screening, guests were invited to view the print exhibition on the second floor of the Cumann na Daoine premises. The exhibition, which is free to the public, showcases 45 carefully selected photographic prints that capture the everyday life, social events, and cultural landmarks of Youghal’s past.

HONOURING A LEGACY

Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley, who had the honour of officially launching the exhibition, delivered a heartfelt speech that encapsulated the significance of the event. She praised Bickerdike’s work for his ability to beautifully capture the spirit of the town and preserve it for future generations. She also commended Kieran McCarthy for his exceptional efforts in archiving and presenting the collection, highlighting the exhibition’s role in strengthening the bonds within the community by sharing these cherished memories. In her speech, Cllr Linehan Foley noted the importance of the exhibition in immersing the people of Youghal in their own heritage, stating, “Often people can grow up or live in areas without knowing its true history; however, this exhibition is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in Youghal’s heritage.” She also extended her gratitude to Cumann na Daoine for facilitating the exhibition and acknowledged the support of Cork County Council’s Heritage Scheme Grant, which made this event a part of the National Heritage Week activities.

COMMUNITY EFFORT AND DEDICATION

Hayley Fox-Roberts, Community Development Worker with Cumann na Daoine, expressed her delight in hosting the exhibition. She emphasised that the project, which had been months in the making, was a labour of love, driven by a commitment to honour the legacy of the late Bob Bickerdike. Her collaboration with Kieran McCarthy was instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, and she acknowledged the voluntary and non-profit nature of the exhibition as a fitting tribute to Bickerdike’s life and work.

Kieran McCarthy, in his speech, provided insights into the journey that led to the exhibition. He recounted how he first discovered Bickerdike’s collection and shared it with the public through a hugely successful Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/thebobbickerdikephotocollection/

The overwhelming response from the community fuelled his determination to create a physical exhibition, bringing Bickerdike’s work back to the town he loved so dearly. Kieran extended his thanks to all who supported the project, including Ray Flanagan and Brian McCarthy at Flanagan Print Youghal, for their professional printing of the images on display.
